3 out of 5 stars Not the fastest HDD on the block   August 22, 2010

Good value for money, but some of the slowest transfer speeds i've ever seen on an external HDD.
Probably wont buy another one, my Buffalo is nearly twice as fast.
Could be down to the type of USB connector, this uses the same one that you would use to charge your mobile phone, rather than the chunker one that printers and other external drives use.
But for cheap storage that yo dont need to use that often or steam movies from, its fine.

4 out of 5 stars Back up Storage   August 16, 2010

Using USB powered portable drives as the medium I store my video collection on I think is the right choice for portability, but then a backup system is needed as bitter experience in the past has proved.

This storage might not be the fastest, but for backup that's not really the issue, nor is the fact it has to have an external power supply and is larger than portable USB drives.

The fact is that at half the price I can store 4 drive full of 500gb portable drives on it and enable it just by pressing a mains switch to get it ready for a backup session.

As always you have to do a quick format to get rid of the pre-installed software.

Its quiet, cool and can be tucked away and forgotten until a disaster means you need it.

3 out of 5 stars WD Elements Review   August 9, 2010

I purchased this drive just over 30 days ago.
Worked well for the first week. Quite as a mouse and appeared to be just the hard drive, no software to install and nothing to worry about, plug and play!
I formatted it as NTFS (Quick format).

However over the past 2 weeks the drive started playing up with corruption to the NTFS master table.
I managed to off load my data to other drives I have, unfortunately I can no longer format the drive so I have asked Amazon for a refund for now.

4 out of 5 stars nice little/ big drive   July 30, 2010

i like the glossy black design. makes it look good quality. very quiet, low heat, in fact deosnt feel hot at all. you hardly know its there.
had to format it for Mac, but thats standard and no problem. takes two minutes.
sleeps nicely when the mac is turned off, unlike my seagate drive on FW800, that stays on!

my only gripe with WD ext USB drives is that they intentionally dont state the buffer size (could be anywhere between (8MB-64MB these days), or spindle speed. even on there own website they dont provide that info. unlike when you buy internal drives they give you all the tech spec. do they think people who buy external drives dont know what they are looking at?
but am assuming its 5400rpm, and not 7200rpm, and 8MB buffer. ie the lowest spec possible. otherwise why else would they not include that info? they really should be more up front about there products and not hide the truth!

it is a huge capacity, and i am using it as Time Machine Back up drive, so the (slower) speed hopefully wont be an issue. the write speed at the moment appears to be standard for USB2.0, so cant really complain.
i have s lightly older 1.5TB WD USB 2.0, that i bought earlier in the year, and its appears to be on a par with that, in terms of performance. though i do prefer the new glossy look.

btw, i paid £95 for it through amazon, but it seems to have gone up now? must be all these kind reviews making them sell out!

5 out of 5 stars Great no nonsense drives   July 23, 2010

After using the My Book series for a number of years, WD decided to force their own back up software onto my computers. After searching hi and low for a replacement to the My Book series, I settled on these cheaper drives to back up my back ups!

No crappy, buggy software means they worked perfectly with decent transfer rate over usb2 so I'd definitely recommend!
