4 out of 5 stars Samsung N140 Netbook   June 23, 2010

Excellent netbook with a great battery life. Have uprated RAM to 2GB and it has improved speed of loading.

Keyboard is excellent and easy to use with accuracy.

Overall very pleased with purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Samsung N140 Netbook   May 21, 2010

A really nice laptop with clear screen, very good battery life and a surprisingly easy to use touchpad.

It would have been helpful if the instructions had mentioned that initial set up would take well over an hour - if I had been in a hurry it would have been a problem.

But a good purchase which I can happily recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect - it's my baby!   April 3, 2010

I've had my N140 for a few months now. Absolutely perfect given the current Atom chip spec. Here's how I set mine up.

Firstly, bought my N140 with Windows 7 starter. Upgraded on line immediately to Windows 7 Home Premium. Then increased RAM to 2gb.

Got rid of McAffee and downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials for free. Smooth, safe and highly recommended.

Then got a mouse - Logitech M305 with a nano receiver so the receiver stays in the netbook permanently -Logitech Wireless Mouse M305 Dark Silver - 910-000937

Bought an external DVD drive - Samsung SE-S084C, External USB 2.0 Slimline 8X DVD Writer, Black

And finally got a brilliant bag to put everything in - Tech Air 2110V2 Air Protection Laptop Satchel - Black

Back to the netbook. Some simple settings enable the screen to be used in full - no task bars or ribbons visible. In Windows 7 right click the task bar, select properties then auto hide. When you need the task bar move the cursor to the bottom of the screen and it'll pop up. In Office Word 2007, for example, right click the ribbon at the top of the screen and check the "minimize ribbon" box. Don't worry about the functionality disappearing. Click any of the menu tabs and the full ribbon will appear as and when required. Apply same to other programmes.

And finally the power settings. FN + F8 allows access to three different power settings for the programme you're in (hold down FN and press F8 repeatedly to toggle between settings). When the N140 isn't plugged in use this to select the speed mode and YouTube, BBCi Player etc. work fine (battery life 4.5 hours +). Oh, and have a fiddle with the basic battery/netbook settings too in the Samsung app or through Windows 7. All settings can be changed to create a permanent configuration that's right for you.

I bought my N140 Netbook because, through research, it's currently the best on the market. The screen is perfect (no glare), the keyboard is 95% the size of a standard one (a miracle given the size of the unit) and the screen DOES tilt back enough. And it's virtually silent. What a joy!!

I use it for the usual office applications plus writing "out in the field" That is, I take it out and basically sit under a tree in the middle of nowhere to write my next classic screenplay in Final Draft 8 (method writing!). Battery life exceeds 8 hours. And the bag even holds draft script versions, pens, pads and other writer clutter including whiskey flask, cigarettes and anti-depressants.

Okay, I'm no great screenwriter but this netbook is an absolute classic. A must buy for the great out (and in) doors. Couldn't come more recommended. It's my baby!

9/5/10 - three important additions to the above. First, if you like me have problems with the arrow keys - ie: hitting page up/page down - you can make these keys react differently. I changed the key code to "control+pageup" etc. This is simply done through windows. So if your little finger hits a page up/down command you'll no longer see your page zooming in either direction. To find out how, type in "how to redefine the insert key" into Google. The principle is just the same.

Second - dear iPad considerers. The whole of the above spec costs less than a basic iPad. You may want to take advantage of Flash that an iPad doesn't support(which is why and how half the web works). You may want simple tihngs in life like multi-tasking (email on, internet on, and you're reading an eBook- just a small example). You may consider the concept of true portability (man, you've got to have a large pocket for that iPad). Netbooks win.

And the third thing? You can re-orientate the screen to suit eBook reading - from horizantal to vertical. It's all built in. It's all there.

I think Mr Jobs was having a laugh when he knocked netbooks at the iPad launch. There's no comparison between an iPad and a good netbook - the best, still so far, being the N140. Netbooks. Cheaper, far more capable. A far more intelligent purchasing decision. I rest case.

2 out of 5 stars Slippery keyboard   March 15, 2010

It is a little bit slow, but I do not complain about it. What really gets on my nerves is that if you are wrong with some keys, you get: undesired windows opening, screen getting bigger or smaller or scrolling, and finally the immediate and definitive disappearance of messages you are typing. Maybe Samsung should have tought about letting the owner be in control, and not having to defend himself from the unwanted initiatives of the pc at whatever minor typing error.

4 out of 5 stars Great with just 1 niggly fault   March 14, 2010

I travel overseas alot, so this is much more convenient than my laptop and the smaller size was not the handicap I thought it might be. The WiFi with Skype was excellent. I have now upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium so that I can record U.K. T.V. programmes to watch when I'm away from home. All in all I'm very pleased with it except it has started to shut down by it self when left on the Windows media timer to record programmes, which meant I did not get all the programmes I wanted recorded.
I will try and sort this out when back in U.K. as my Windows 7 for Dummies should have arrived by then from Amazon.
Obviously, it really depends on what you use the N140 for and give a judgment on that but for me its an excellent tool.
I also upgrade to 2GB with no problems, (it really is very easy)
